Parent Workshops and Activities


Attention Parents:  All of the activities listed are FREE!


The Special Education Parent-Teacher Resource Center is located at 2316 William Reid Drive (Elephant's Fork Elementary-moble unit 1).


October 27 - Strategies and Guidance for parents of children with ADHD and/or Learning Disabilities, a program from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at the Parent Resource Center. October 28 - The Suffolk Reading Council is sponsoring a “Fathers Raising Readers” workshop at Elephant’s Fork Elementary School beginning at 6:30 p.m.  This workshop is presented by Dr. Deran Whitney, Deputy Superintendent for Suffolk Public Schools.  Come learn how to encourage your child to become a lifelong reader.   Strategies will be shared to help your child become a confident reader and develop a love for reading.  Learn about partner reading, “What Good Readers Do,” at-home dialogue journals, family read-aloud time, turning every day tasks into rich learning opportunities, promoting literacy in the car and many other activities that will help your child improve reading skills and develop a love for reading.  All parents (Moms, included) of students in Pre-K through 5th grade are encouraged to attend.  Take-home literature packets and free books will be distributed to all parents in attendance.  Refreshments will be served.  Call Conjo Whitney, Suffolk Reading Council President at 923-5250 for more information. 


November 3 - “Homework Survival Workshop” at Booker T. Washington Elementary at 6:30 p.m. End the nightly battle over homework with a practical approach to developing good study skills that will last a lifetime. For more information contact Tawnya Vogel at 934-6226.


November 5 - “Reading Strategies for Success”
at Creekside Elementary, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. For more information contact Janet Phillips at 923-4251.


November 12 - “Preparing For Conferences”
at Elephant’s Fork Elementary, from 8:30 to 9:00 a.m. Parents will be given tips on how to hold an effective conference at school.

November 13 - “Family Reading Night” at Mack Benn Jr. Elementary, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Lakeland High School’s Football players and Cheerleaders will come to read with the students. For more information contact Beverly Washington-Williams at 934-6224.


November 14 - “Parent Resource Fair” at Kilby Shores Elementary at 10:00 a.m.
Sample resource materials will be available for the Title I Parent Resource Center.

November 18 - “Homework Tips" at Hillpoint Elementary from 2:00 to 3:00p.m.
