Government
  • The parliament believed they had the legal authority in the colonies, while the colonists believed  local assemblies had authority. Also the colonists didn’t want to be taxed.

  • The Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson. It states that authority to govern belongs to the people.

Roles of Virginians
  • VIRGINIA Patriots served in the Continental Army and battled against the English.
  • Some Virginians were neutral.
  • Some Virginians were loyal to England.
  • James A. Lafayette was a slave that  served in the Continental Army.
  • Women took more responsibility during the war.

  • George Washington provided military leadership in the Continental Army. Thomas Jefferson provided political leadership. Patrick Henry inspired patriots from other colonies and spoke out, … “Give me liberty or give me death.’’

  • The American victory at Yorktown resulted in the surrender of the English army, bringing an end to the war.
