Elephant’s Fork Elementary School has received a number of grants over the years to enhance the instructional program. Grant monies have been used for the Accelerated Reader program, the Accelerated Math program, a parent resource center, Virginia history workbooks, and a take-home reading program, and Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) which provides a free book for children quarterly. The school is in its third year as the recipient of a federal Reading First grant.

Technology is widely implemented at Elephant’s Fork. Classrooms in kindergarten through fifth grade are equipped with Internet-accessible desktop computers. A computerized SmartBoard and classroom set of laptops are available for use in all classrooms.

Elephant’s Fork included an Early Start program this year. These energetic four-year-olds have excelled in their academic endeavors as they prepare for success in kindergarten.

Shining Stars

The Title I teachers – Linda Goode, Judy Scott, Jane Webb, and Conjo Whitney, Reading Coach – have expanded our Parent University this year to include speakers. Each of the Parent University sessions provides opportunities for the faculty to work with parents to teach them about the SOLs (Standards of Learning). Parents are taught techniques to help their children succeed academically.

The fourth- and fifth-grade student choir meets every morning before school allowing our students to express and develop their musical talents. The choir performs at many events including PTA meetings, school assemblies and community events.

Art students at Elephant’s Fork can have their artwork displayed online in an international virtual gallery by Artsonia. This gallery enables family and friends who don’t live nearby to view their students’ art and purchase custom gifts made from photos of the artwork. Artsonia also supplements the school art fund, which enables the school to purchase more art supplies. Talented Music students frequently have their personal artwork displayed at community businesses and the School Administrative Office.

Elephant’s Fork students received several awards in the district PTA Reflections contest in writing and visual art, the Young Authors writing contest, and the City-Wide Science Fair.

Media specialist Mendie Williams sponsored a celebration of the birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss. The school was transformed into “Seussville” when students decorated doors and walls around the school to display themes from books written by Dr. Seuss.
