We believe that the joint efforts of school, home, and community are essential to develop a positive self-image and to foster academic, social and personal growth of our students. We endeavor to extend to them a supportive, caring, and safe environment to promote becoming responsible citizens and productive members of our global society.

Students are provided interdisciplinary lessons based on cooperative, hands-on activities.

Unique to John Yeates is a grant of $1,500 from the Effective School-Wide Discipline Program through the Old Dominion University.

Extracurricular organizations and clubs available to students include Student Council Association; Future Business Leaders of America; Yearbook Staff; Intramural Soccer, Basketball & Volleyball; CHROME Club; Technology Student Association; Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America; John Yeates Dance Team; and all junior varsity sports at Nansemond River High School.

Shining Stars
The JYMS seventh grade civic classes participate in the Junior Achievement program. Community volunteers teach students economics and business skills weekly for eight weeks.
Annually our students participate in fundraising events that support national and local charities such as:  Toys for Tots, United Way, March of Dimes, and the Salvation Army.
Seven students - Toniana Baum,  Mayteanna Colon,  JadaWhite, Tyler Ray, Janeen Griffith, Emily Romero, and David Delvecchio -- were selected for All-District Chorus.
Steven Ange, Josh Kritz and Earnestine Powell were named to the Sister Cities District Band.
The school is particularly proud of Debbie Bunch, the school’s Teacher of the Year, and Amy Hoffman, the school’s Rookie Teacher of the Year.

2007 Test Scores
The Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs) are a framework of basic skills students in each grade level should learn in English, math, science, social studies, and technology.

The SOL tests are given each spring to measure students' success in meeting these state standards. State benchmarks for 2007 is a 70 percent pass rate in all subjects.

Results of the 2008 assessments are expected from the state in the early fall.

John Yeates students have captured awards in the following areas:
Technology Students of America regional and state fair championship award winners
Local awards, such as Woodmen of the World American History award, Amadas Industry Award for Achievement in Math & Science, Young Writers contest, PTA Reflections Cultural Arts contest and the St. Jude's Math-a-thon.
